The Railway Children

This classic novel is told faithfully in a simple piece of charming children’s theatre.

The cast of seven adult actors cleverly conjure up the feel of several different scenes with one simple backdrop and adept use of props. The sound track creates a believable atmosphere, including a very convincing passing train and a dark train tunnel. There were moments of tension and moving scenes too, such as when the refugee is discovered on the train platform by the porter.

My seven year old who knows the story well, enjoyed the show very much and though there was a bit of shuffling during the longer dialogues, generally the performance held the audience’s attention throughout.

Though the show is not unsuitable for younger ones, I would hesitate to take any child younger than 8 who did not know the story, as the play is very dependent on the storyline and the dialogue to carry it through. There are no clever smoke and mirror or daredevil tricks here!

All in all a worthy and entertaining way to spend an hour.

My mini reviewer said : ‘I liked it when they rescued the boy with the broken leg. It was fun’
