Fanfare – brass band day 23rd august

Fanfare is a city-wide event, part of the Edinburgh International festival, that harnesses the enormous forces of Scotland’s community of brass bands by working with the Scottish Brass Band Association to present a day of free performances for everyone to enjoy.

Throughout the day, audiences across the city will be able to share the joy and passion of the live brass band. Everyone will be listening to the same pieces of music at the same time in at least 12 different locations around the city.

On at 12 noon, 3pm and 5pm – there is a map showing locations on the webpage here. Venues include the Botanics, a barge on the canal at Fountainbridge, the gallery of Modern Art and at the shore in Leith.

Looks like something completely different and fun during this festival season…

Tiger – tastic at the Pleasance….

It appears the Pleasance has fallen in love with large stripy orange and black cats this year, hosting three Tiger themed children’s shows for us all to enjoy. Differing in their portrayal of these elegant cats, all three shows are worth a peek :

You Look Tasty ! (A Play by A. Tiger ) – An escaped Tiger has a penchant for amateur dramatics, bringing a show to the Fringe itself. In this captivating performance, one of his zookeepers tells us how it all came about. Harriet Kemsely is absolutely fantastic as the traumatised and nervous zookeeper, she is a talented storyteller, able to keep the whole audience in rapt attention. The odd appearance of a tiger’s tail and the occasional roar keeps the suspense going, with only a few children seemingly brave enough to actually go on stage. As we unravel the events, and meet a second zookeeper, we are also introduced to the wider concepts of animals reared in captivity and the relationships and bonds they form with their human caregivers. Funny, scary, thought-provoking and silly….go check it out if you can !

The Tiger Who Came To Tea – I am sure every parent and child is familiar with this story from the much loved book by Judith Kerr, about a hungry Tiger who joins a little girl called Sophie and her Mummy for tea. This is a fantastic adaptation of the book, and keeps it’s original and simple charm. Whilst being a rather short story – this production adds in some songs and dances to make it all last a little longer. The set is gorgeous and looks exactly like the original illustrations and it is used in some clever tricks to surprise the audience. The greatest surprise of all was the Tiger himself who drew a great response of excitement from the audience and had us all up singing and dancing with him too ! A delightful show to enjoy with little ones….

Mr Tiger Goes Wild – The only show in the tiger trilogy that I have not managed to see yet but I have read good things about it – especially the music ! “Mr Tiger was perfectly fine in the city – until he had a wonderfully wild idea! A show for ages 3+ that’s a bit rock’n’roll, adapted from the book by Peter Brown. Join Mr Tiger on an adventure into the wilderness featuring original live music, hilarious characters and lots of imagination that will have children roaring with laughter.”

So there you have it – for Tiger fans everywhere large and small – three delightful shows to choose from – each offering something a little bit special……(I wonder if this will become an annual event and next year we’ll see another animal being featured)…

Weekend-ing…

So, we have had yet another lovely weekend of festivalling, and it feels a bit sad as the schools are going back this week and so our time together to go and see shows and hang out in all the fun places is now being cut short…

We made the most of it this weekend and saw the fantastic Albee Vector the Sound Collector, which I have been wanting to see since last year. It was a brilliant show, with lots of audience participation in the collection of sounds and some clever use of all those old jam jars that are normally thrown away ! I would highly recommend seeing it if you can, Albee and the lovely Adromeda are skilled storytellers and you’ll love meeting Mustard – the sound hoover too !

We also made it down to the brilliant Book Festival ! It was a great morning of events, discovering new books in the bookshop and squeezing in some colouring in too…I am looking forward to returning there a few times in the next two weeks.

I have been busy writing up reviews for the shows we have been seeing, so please take the time to check them out here if you have a moment….

Spotlight on ‘The Circus Hub’…

Is it just me, or does there appear to be a large amount of circus/acrobatic shows at the festival this year ? In the last few years, circus and physical theatre shows seem to be increasing and it feels like somewhat of a theme this year – and personally I love it.

Along with the general increase in the number of shows, there is a new fantastic venue this year, the first venue devoted to circus – The Circus Hub – situated on the Meadows, and bringing us two, large, white domes (named The Lafayette and The Beauty after a Victorian circus performer and illusionist The Great Lafayette and his performing dog Beauty) showcasing what they tell us the art of circus can be – epic, intimate and utterly exhilarating.

Included in the rather fantastic looking line up are of course a few dedicated family shows, and a few performances that also welcome younger members of the audience:

Trash Test Dummies – I have mentioned this show previously and also reviewed it here, do go check it out if you can, it’s a very fun, chaotic and musical  circus show which the whole family will enjoy. (on until 29th August)

The Hogwallops – This family show blends circus skills, physical theatre and slapstick comedy in a thrilling domestic adventure set to a specially composed live score. (on until 29th August)

Ockham’s Razor: ‘Arc’ and ‘Every Action’Ockham’s Razor: Arc and Every Action – this show actually combines two pieces of aerial performance – the first – Arc, is a beautiful, gentle piece performed on a suspended piece of what looks like metal scaffolding. This piece explores the relationship between three people and conveys ideas of trust, vulnerability and friendship. The second performance – Every Action – brings some humour to the proceedings and explores the developing relationships between strangers left alone with some dangling ropes. Both stories show the huge depth of talent of the performers and also their skills in performing with original pieces of aerial equipment. With enchanting music accompanying both pieces, it is a thing of beauty to watch, and something that older children can appreciate with awe. Being quite short, it is a perfect introduction to physical theatre and the innovative performance that can be created when people push the boundaries. Well worth a visit….

Bromance – Combining dance, physical theatre and circus this is a very fun, original and often graceful show. Exploring the relationship between three male friends, one of the things I loved about the piece was the difference in their statures. I liked seeing the balance between the tall and small, the strong set and the sleeker. Starting off with a handshake and building momentum, this piece includes elegant movements, funky dancing, heart-stopping acrobatics and  a stunning hoop routine. I would highly recommend you get down to the Circus Hub to see this , with or without the children !

Book festival opening tomorrow….Saturday 15th August !

Image result for edinburgh book festivalThe Book festival opens tomorrow, the 15th August, and I am very excited – I LOVE this festival and I also love it as a venue to spend time with the kids – the children’s bookshop is a fantastic place to while away some time and they always have plenty of cosy nooks and crannies to settle down to explore some of the fantastic books on offer.

The festival also has the ‘story box’ which is a dedicated arts and crafts space for kids which is packed daily with new activities drawing on themes from the events held that day. There is often face painting and storytelling too, and it’s all FREE ! This means you can come and spend a few hours at the Book festival even if you don’t have tickets for any of the events.

The opening weekend is playing host to two days of extra special fun in the story box:

Animal AnticsSaturday 15th August from 1-4pm  – Animal Antics – They’ve got lots of animals in the programme; so drop-in to meet some more: two pygmy goats called Moonlight and Shadow. In association with Gorgie City Farm.

Happy Birthday MiffySunday 16th August from 2-4pmHappy Birthday Miffy – Believe it or not, Dick Bruna’s beloved picture book character Miffy is 60 this year. Join us to celebrate the little rabbit’s birthday. You might even get to meet her!
