Fringe by the Sea 5th- 14th August 2022

In this brilliant sunny weather we’ve been having, nothing seems better than a festival located at the seaside, to get the best of everything !! And Fringe by the Sea captures just that….

Returning to its stunning North Berwick location, Fringe by the Sea offers a fantastic programme of author talks, music, magic shows, seaside science, craft workshops and lots more…its DEFINITELY worth checking out, and makes for a great day trip, combined with some beach action and fish and chips !

Check out the full programme of events here, and here are a few of our top picks for events for children and littler folk….

Make Mess Matter – This is on six days over the festival and promises to be lots of fun ! Messy play for under 5s, and slime making for ages 5+ in this mega mess session. Engage the senses and develop skills and coordination through play.

Grafitti Workshop – If you’ve ever thought about trying your hand at street art, here’s a chance to develop your skills and get creative. Spectrum Arts are offering up a special workshop which includes using spray responsibly, basic technique, characters, backgrounds and stencils. Ages 12+

Silent Disco Adventure Tours – These are SO much fun ! Join the Silent Adventures Team as they lead you in a song and dance around the beautiful streets of North Berwick for the famous one-hour guided adventure. Expect all your inhibitions to melt away as you don our hi-tech headsets and bust some funky new moves whilst singing your heart out. Age 5 +

Beano – Calling all Mischief-Makers… Beano is back and inviting you to join in the fun in this 45-minute show from the brains behind the much-loved comic. An interactive session led by Beano writers. Created especially for kids 6+…

Bugsy Malone – I LOVE this play, this promised to be lots of fun. Come with us on a journey to 1920s New York for a show full of gangsters, molls, glamour, speakeasies and cream pies. Join our talented cast of 27 local children aged between 8 and 12 and our fabulous live band, as they belt out classic numbers including My Name is Tallulah, You Give A Little Love and Fat Sam’s Grand Slam.

Colouring Nature – Eilidh Muldoon – These colouring events are super lovely and super relaxing..Join Eilidh for a relaxed doodling and colouring-in session inspired by her latest book: The Scottish Nature Colouring Book. Chock-full of intricate drawings of plants and animals from around Scotland, you’ll get chance to hone you colouring-in skills as well as drawing your own scenes and creatures and bringing them to life with colour!

Fringe By The Sea 2nd – 11th August 2019

The fabulous and incredibly located Fringe By The Sea is fast approaching..bringing us sun, sea, sand and a jam packed programme brimming over with great shows and events….

There are loads of family friendly experiences – including music, science colouring in and some brilliant sounding craft workshops – check them out here.

Eilidh Muldoon : Giant Colouring In With Tea And Cake – We have been to a few of these events before with Eilidh and have really enjoyed them – it’s always a great creative, relaxing atmosphere with some delicious goodies to help the artistic juices flow ! Celebrating our coastline and waters, adults and kids alike can help create the final result in this relaxed session.    Sunday 4th August

 

So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs… With Dr Ben Garrod – So You Think You Know About Dinosaurs is the hit stage show starring dinosaur aficionado Dr Ben Garrod. Get ready to go on an exciting pre-historic adventure as Ben explores the biggest, deadliest and weirdest predators that ever roamed the planet. Yes, dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, Allosaurus and Spinosaurus would have walked or swam right where you are now!     Saturday 10th August

 

Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dancehall – Returning to Fringe by the sea, this is a musical treat for little ones who love to dance !! Selling out shows around the world, come find out why DJ Monski Mouse is a hit with the under fives and parents/carers. Expect high energy, retro hits, pop favourites and funky nursery rhymes!      Sunday 4th August

 

Major Minor Music Club Presents C Duncan – This looks like a GREAT idea and very unique – a club that adults can take children along to, and see bands that everyone can enjoy together ! Formed by frustrated parents of young kids, MMMC is a safe place for parents to take their kids to see some of the best bands. Bands play at a lower volume and shorter sets plus there’s music-inspired face painting, doughnuts, balloons, stickers and a ‘tiny tattoo studio’. Mercury Prize nominated C Duncan is a Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist whose classical music upbringing seeps into his sophisticated, billowy indie pop creations.   Saturday 3rd August

 

 

 

 

Fringe by the Sea 2016 : 8th – 14th August

.Fringe by the Sea returns to it’s beautiful beachside location and has two children’s events that both look great, so that along with a day at the seaside and some lobster and chips you can enjoy a show or two in a different setting outside the usual festival locations !

FBTS-website_image_6Alexander the Great –  join award winning entertainer, Alexander the Great, for fun filled entertainment at the Spiegeltent. Alexander the Great, who trained in Circus Skills at De Hoogta Circus School in Amsterdam, specialises in magic and circus skills.
The 9am interactive entertainment shall include magic, and games, for ages 3yrs to adult! The 11am show will teach Circus Skills as well as games.
9th – 14th August, 9am and 11am.

And Mr Boom returns to Fringe by the Sea once again -festival veteran Mr Boom will be back to entertain children with his one-man band from the moon !  His imaginary spaceship has been landing on Planet Earth for over 30 years and he continues to enchant and delight wee Earthlings with an exciting mix of action songs, circle dancing and spontaneous banter.            9th August 3pm and 10th August 12.00

Fringe By The Sea 2015 – 10th -16th August North Berwick

Fringe By The Sea has a stunning beach location, so you can enjoy a great family seaside day out and catch a festival show too ! It’s like a minature Edinburgh Fringe festival and as such it hosts a handful of family friendly shows and events that are well worth checking out – I’ve picked a few in particular :

Mr Boom – Festival veteran Mr Boom will be back again to entertain children with his one-man band from the moon ! This promises to be an exciting mix of song, dance and audience participation !              12th August 3pm, 13th August 11am  (ages 3-9)

Tales in the Tide – Do you dare to take the hand of a mermaid? Swim with a Selkie? Hear the song of a Siren? Such stories are only fishwives’ tales… or are they? Come and join this London-based theatre company as they transport you deep into the enchanting depths of some of the greatest folktales and fairytales of the tides.      12th and 13th August 4.30pm (Age 7+)

Funbox – The magical FUNBOX contains everything you need to sing a song and have an adventure, but it’s locked tight, and won’t open until you find the special keys to open it up. Where could those keys be hiding though? Can you help to find them all?       13th August 2pm

Fringe By The Sea – North Berwick 4th-10th August

We have been blessed with a great summer lately…long sunny days and warm summer evenings and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays this way well into August to make festival season even better !

Fringe By The Sea in North Berwick is a great combination – you can have a lovely day out on the beach and see a show with the sand still between your toes !

There are a few bits and pieces for children during the festival that are worth checking out :

Mr Boom – Festival veteran Mr Boom will be back again to entertain children with his one-man band from the moon ! This promises to be an exciting mix of song, dance and audience participation !    August 5th at 3pm and August 6th at 11am.  Tickets from £6

The other childrens events are more your usual kids classes/workshops running special festival events :

Sparkle Arts : Sparkle arts offer children performing arts classes and will be bringing a fun mix of music, drama, dance and storytelling to the festival. Workshops are suitable for 2-5 year olds.    5th August 11am/1pm,  and 9th August 11am/1pm             Tickets from £6

Jo Jingles – ‘Summer at the seaside’ is the theme this year and they will be hoping for sunshine with this singing, music and movement class for babies and children. Suitable for 1-6yrs old.      7th August 11am/1pm.                Tickets from £6

Bookbugs – This is a great FREE event run by East Lothian’s library service – its a mixture of rhyme, story and song accompanied by a good selection of puppets and instruments to make it as interactive as possible!                   8th August 11am  FREE
